The negative consequence for barking can be many actions, but it should be something firm without harming your dog. For example, you can say "Stop Barking!" in a way that will astonish and totally leave your dog barkless. If the barking starts up while you are close, an immediate "STOP BARKING!!!" at about 120 decibels ear-splitting loud will shock most dogs into attention. Maybe it takes more than that, but maybe not. But you must be immediate and totally consistent. Unless the action is immediate, how will your dog associate the negative action with the barking?
