How to Train Your Dog and Teach Good Behavior by Randy Hemsley

You should also be consistent when it comes to house rules. For example, if your dog isn't permitted to sit on the couch, then you should never allow your dog on the couch. Period. If you occasionally allow him up there to sit with you, you'll only confuse the dog. So, if you intend to set boundaries for your pet, it's important that you enforce these boundaries on a consistent basis.

In short, every good trainer needs to understand that dogs aren't humans. They need a firm, but gentle hand and a trainer who is willing to enforce the rules, while demonstrating patience and compassion. You'll never succeed by losing your temper or showing weakness; instead you must be calm and in control at all times.
