Heavy Martial Artists - Becoming a Cement-Filled Refrigerator in a Fight by Keith Pascal

(Contd. from page 1...)

Cement Solid is Not an Excuse for Sloppy

Look, I try to avoid getting hit (and do the hitting instead) as much as the next guy. If my technique, timing, and distance are all better than my attacker's, then I may avoid getting pommeled. It's nice to know if the bad guy hits me in the stomach, chest, or upper leg, there's a good chance it won't phase me. I have a "solid build."

Conclusion

If you are overweight, but "soft," martial arts is the perfect toughening method. I am not just talking about building muscle.

You learn to take a punch and a kick. It happens all the time in training. Being on the receiving end comes with the territory. Hits during practice become not such a big deal -- much better to get hit during practice than in a real self-defense situation.

And if you do get hit, isn't it nice to know that you have the frame of a cement-filled ice box to absorb the hit. Ah, the advantage of being a heavy martial artist.
